Did you know that Alberta’s natural resources contribute over $100 billion to the Canadian economy each year?
That’s more than any other province in the country. And at the heart of it all lies the Grade 4 Alberta Social Studies curriculum, aimed at helping students appreciate the value of their province’s physical geography and natural environment. By learning about the variety and abundance of resources that Alberta holds, students will not only gain a deeper understanding of their home province, but also develop a greater appreciation for how these resources sustain their communities and quality of life. In this lesson, we will explore the key principles of the Grade 4 Alberta Social Studies curriculum and how it fosters a sense of pride and stewardship for the land among young learners.
Learning Intentions:

- Compare and contrast information from different sources.
- Use a simple map to locate areas of natural resources in Alberta.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how people use natural resources.
- Draw a simple chart of ideas expressing the cycle of a natural resource from source to economic development to consumption to waste and consequences.
- Evaluate whether information supports an issue or a research question.
- Apply information learned to compare quality of life before use of a natural resource and after.
