Fostering Better Comprehension in Grade 8 Students – Using Before, During and After Reading Strategy
Reading nonfiction texts can be daunting for some students, especially grade 8 students. Knowing the skilful tips, tricks and strategies can be useful for making the most out of the materials they are tackling. By utilizing the three key phases, before, during and after reading, students can not only comprehend the text better, but also retain the information.
This lesson provides students with the opportunity to practice their nonfiction reading using this strategy. Throughout the reading passage students will answer questions before, during and after reading the article.
Before you read the passages (reasoning and critical thinking skills; dictionary and thesaurus skills)
While you read the passage (comprehension and higher-thinking questions)
After you read the passage (reading comprehension skills; extension activities)
