Unit 1: Short Vowels Students learn that short vowels don’t “say their name.” When a word has one vowel between two consonants, it usually makes a short sound — as in cap or above. Exceptions like does, head, some, and done are explored so learners understand patterns, not just memorize them.
Lessons combine guided practice, independent work, and review tasks that reinforce sound‑symbol relationships. High‑frequency words are flagged for extra attention, ensuring students strengthen the vocabulary they use most.
